Alpha Phase

Alpha and Beta testing, in advance of commercial deployment, will involve leading members and top security experts from world leading digital civil rights organizations and communities, (and then possibly publicly renowned individuals). As a way to incentivize such organizations and individuals to very actively participate to the alpha and beta testing, the UVST Consortium will commit to provision the service to such kind of organizations and experts, as well as any non-profit primarily member-supported organization, for the first 3 years, at marginal cost of provisioning the service, for up to 20% of total users of a given the UVST service.
Although the UVST service could clearly be marketed as a high-premium service for high-worth individuals, it is crucial to pursue concurrently commercialization scenarios aimed at mid-worth ordinary individuals, in order to have quickly thousands and then tens of thousands of devices in operation to: (A) drive  down dramatically costs units;(B) improve security and performance of its onion routing functionality by having more many thousands of CivicDongle nodes; (C) improve CivicRoom access oversight procedures through random sampled user, chosen from high numbers of users within driving distance; (D) an end-to-end service affordable to any citizen, in addition to being open and deployable by any independent CivicProvider (after the initial months), can strongly incentivize more ethical hackers and top world security experts to participate actively in its testing (paid and volunteer).

Initial High-premium Phase (B2C & B2B)

TARGET MARKETS: As a white-label or custom deployment of ultra-private mobile&desktop unified communications solutions, for high-worth individuals, and for large private and public organizations,  including state security agencies and critical state institutions. It would effectively compete with secure and highest-security:

    1. DualOS (hybrid or dual persona) handsets and end-to-end solutions, aimed BYOD user scenarios, such as Telefonica Dual Persona Service as well as Samsung Know, and similar.
    2. Cryptophones for public and private institutions, such as Deutsche Telekom Simko devices, or GSMK Cryptophone, or GSMK Cryptophone or the new Blackphone.
    3. End-2-end Unified communication solutions.
    4. Other:
      1. As while-label, custom deployment or direct service offering of server-side-only ultra-private and ultra-secure IaaS, PaaS, CED, hosting solutions in highest-security deployment scenarios; for public and private organizations, including state security agencies;
      2. As white-label or custom deployment for banks and bank associations for their premium clients, of a end-to-end device+service enabling premium clients to do one-time password generation (replacing their token), ultra-private e-banking and ultra-private communications (and possibly NFC)
      3. As a white label, custom solutions or direct service, of an ultra-private end-to-end email service, and possibly a “certified email PLUS” service.


  • Business Competitors: highest-security cryptophones (GSMK Cryptophone, Blackphone, etc.); highest-security dual OS/persona phones and services (Samsung Knox, Deutsche Telecom Simko, Airwatch, Telefonica Dual Persona Service etc.); highest security “secure mobile apps” form mobile operators and independent providers: Vodafone/Secusmart Secure Call app, KPN Silent Circle Apps
  • Social Competitors/Partners: Telegram, SnapChat, WhatsApp are messaging apps (and platforms) that are competing for market share with user-friendly free mobile apps, primarily on the basis of their privacy and security. They may very well be co-marketing or co-branding partners. Telegram in fact, the one that mostly emphasized its security through transparency as just overtaken WhatsApp (bought by Facebook for 19BN$) in daily downloads. just over but that are in reality extremely vulnerable. and truly hardware-based privacy will become on demand. FEATURES & UX: In all non-consumer deployments,  during the phase 1 of commercial deployment scenarios, CivicPod and CivicPhone will provide the following features:

  • (A) Ultra-private mobile&desktop basic voice, email/text/chat and Web social&business communications,
  • (B) Dual-screen e-ink phone or e-ink peripheral functionality, such as that provided by the widely-hailed YotaPhone (™) and other, that enable non-private content reading and writing other phone functions (e-reader, twitter feed, to do list, grocery list, user-chosen picture for device customization). E-ink reading (and writing) functionality may also be widely enhanced by an (optional) CivicReader, a wide-format “LCD&E-ink” touch-screen that connects via Bluetooth to enlarges the touch experience of the CivicDevice, and provides laptop-like functionality when couple with the Civic Keyboard and a Civic LapCase, providing features offered by Asus PadFone and Asus Transformer product line.

Wide-marketUltra-privacy + entertainment roll out (B2C)

In all consumer deployments, in a phase 2 of commercial deployment for low-cost ordinary consumer deployment the CivicPod and CivicPhone will add entertainment features when combined with a CivicDongle TV-connected device. UVST would be offered as a direct service or device offering, of an ultra-private end-to-end mobile&desktop communication and on-TV entertainment service, to consumer clients, as well as prospective new clients. A optional custom-built TV-connected device – currently named CivicDongle, optionally provided for 5-10 euros/month – or an updated on-the-field partners’ STBs, can be controlled by the dedicated UVST end-user device, the CivicPod, proving a highly-innovative, ergonomic and immersive “magic” touch-based interface to access/interact on-TV with: any free-to-air DVT-B2 content; any Web, Web Apps (FirefoxOS) and Web video content (including HTML5 and DeviceAPI), Partners’ conditionally-accessed and freely-accesses linear and interactive content, ultra-private UVST content. In addition to those already provided by the CivicPod, the CivicDongle would provide:

  • 1. On-TV entertainment features with a comparable choice of linear and interactive content (especially local conditionally-accessed and free Web content), and a substantially more intuitive, ergonomic and immersive user interface, than that provided by Google ChromeCast (™) or Apple TV, through a dedicated 30-50€ TV-connected device controlled via the CivicPod.
    The CivicDevice can remote control an (optional) cheap companion TV-connected HDMI-Dongle, the CivicDongle/Box, that embeds an (unsecured) mid-level mobile-phone chipset running a mobile version of a Firefox Browser for Android and FirefoxOS, a free-to-air DVT-B(2) tuner, onion routing technology, Wi-fi, Bluetooth and multi-format video rendering, including support for Global iTV and partnering local conditionally-accessed video aggregators (such as Italian TivuOn!, Cubovision, Infinity, Amazon, Brazilian broadcaster and/or HbbTV). Such exceptional user interface would be provided by the CivicDevice special kinect-like capabilities, through the addition of special refractive lenses and special software to the dual cameras – the position of the user’s finger tips above the CivicPod screen are tracked and relayed wirelessly to such TV-connected device and made visible on the TV screen as halos of varying size. Finger tips positional information appear as a semi-transparent video-overlay stream on the TV screen that decrease in opacity and size as the finger tips gets closer to the CivicPod screen. Touch events are also relayed to the CivicDongle to trigger touch events on the CivicDongle UI, and therefore on the TV screen. Therefore, the user gets the overall experience of “touch controlling” their TV from the comfort of the Sofa, but while looking at all times to the TV screen instead of the CivicPod screen, including while typing on a virtual keyboard, without having its finger hiding the key about to be pressed. Such interaction enables the on-TV fruition of all of thousands of Firefox Mobile and Firefox OS Web App and all mobile web sites in their unmodified mobile versions (i.e. not modified for traditional or innovative TV input devices) and therefore increasing enormously the number of apps available from day one.
    CivicDongle only supports free content, ad-supported content and “conditionally-accessed content” and related technologies (and processes) which is are NOT DRM, and responds to both the following requirements: 1. does not to any extent limit privacy and freedom of users”; 2. Equals or exceeds other dominant proprietary DRM content fruition platform (Android, iOS, AppleTV, ChromeCast, ) in their the ability to prevent user’s copyright abuse. Objective 1 will always prevail over objective 2.
    An optional 5€ TV-frame docking station for the CivicPod enables interaction with dedicated Kinect-like gaming or interactive Web applications on the CivicDongle (without privacy fears) or compatible application on the user’s smartphone, as well as TV remote control (thumb up for raising volume, swipe hand to previous channel, etc.).
    • Competitors: Internet connect TVs and TV-connected devices, such as: mainstream connected TVs (LG, Samsung, etc), ChromeCast, Apple TV,
    • Competitors/Partners: Most local conditionally-accessed video content aggregators and broadcasters, such as Mediaset, Tivuon! (Rai, Mediaset, TI), Cubovision, which are mostly deployed on devices controlled by others, are can be competitors but can become core partners instead to the extent that they become jointly core members of the CivicDongle governance.
    • 2. Mobile and home kinect-like interaction capabilities, features and apps, for gaming, The CivicPod in fact boosts the dual camera and depth sensors (although less performing), and can interact via Bluetooth with Tango-compatible Android apps. In fact, Google Tango SDK developers, wanting to port their apps to the CivicPod, it is just a matter of adding Bluetooth APIs to the application, and account for very minimal delay added by Bluetooth connection.
